Climate Crisis
Overview:
Climate Crisis is a unique variable typeface created to raise awareness about climate change by visually representing the loss of Arctic sea ice. Designed with the intent to convey urgency, the font progressively "melts" or thins out as its weight changes, mimicking the shrinking ice cover over time. This powerful and innovative approach makes Climate Crisis more than just a typeface—it’s a tool for storytelling about the environment.
History:
Released in 2021 by Helsingin Sanomat, the largest newspaper in the Nordic region, Climate Crisis was developed as part of a broader commitment to data journalism. Art Director Tuomas Jääskeläinen and his team created the typeface based on data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center and projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The font aims to highlight the drastic ice reduction from 1979 through projected declines by 2050, making it both a data-driven and visually impactful way to communicate environmental change.
