Archivo is a modern sans-serif font family known for its clarity, versatility, and high-performance readability across print and digital media. Designed with functional elegance, it combines simplicity with a subtle nod to classic grotesque typefaces, making it suitable for headlines, body text, and large-scale typography projects.
History:
Archivo was developed by Héctor Gatti in collaboration with Omnibus-Type, a Latin American type foundry, and was inspired by late 19th-century American typefaces. Originally designed for headline use, Archivo is now widely embraced for various digital and print applications due to its clean, bold appearance and accessibility across different formats and devices. The font family supports more than 200 languages, reflecting Omnibus-Type’s goal to create highly functional, universally accessible typefaces for a global audience.
Characteristics:
Design: Archivo features strong, consistent strokes with minimal decorative elements, designed to prioritize readability and utility. Its letterforms are inspired by the grotesque style, with balanced, uniform proportions that enhance legibility.
Usage: Ideal for large headlines, banners, and high-impact text, but also works well in body text due to its modern yet straightforward design. Archivo's various weights and narrow styles offer flexibility across branding, editorial, and web design projects.
Attributes: Archivo is known for its durability and adaptability in high-performance typography, excelling in both digital screens and print. It has a neutral, professional appearance with just enough warmth to suit a wide range of uses.
PT Serif
Overview:
PT Serif is a transitional serif typeface with a humanistic touch, designed to provide a modern and approachable reading experience. Its versatile design harmonizes with its sans-serif counterpart, PT Sans, making it a popular choice for both digital and print media where clarity and elegance are essential.
History:
PT Serif was developed by ParaType in 2010, designed by Alexandra Korolkova with contributions from Olga Umpeleva and under the supervision of Vladimir Yefimov. The typeface was part of the “Public Types of Russian Federation” project, funded by the Russian government to commemorate 300 years of civil typography and to support the diverse linguistic needs of the Russian Federation, including the ability to support Cyrillic scripts across numerous regional languages.
Characteristics:
Design: PT Serif’s design features include large x-heights, moderate stroke contrast, robust wedge-shaped serifs, and gentle triangular terminals, creating a sophisticated yet highly legible appearance. This font family consists of six styles, including regular, bold, italic, and caption variants tailored for small text sizes, making it adaptable for both headlines and body text.
Usage: PT Serif is ideal for lengthy text blocks in books, reports, and articles due to its readability. Additionally, its versatility in weights and styles makes it suitable for headlines, captions, and interfaces where a classic yet modern serif feel is desired.
Attributes: PT Serif is known for its clarity, readability, and subtle elegance, offering a timeless feel that enhances text-heavy layouts. Its balanced proportions and harmonious relationship with PT Sans make it a popular choice for brands, publications, and websites aiming for a cohesive, professional aesthetic.
